A Telepathy Ball (Japanese: テレパシーボール), also localized as Sphere, is a communication device in the Phantasy Star series.

Appearance[]

A telepathy ball is typically depicted as an opaque sphere that is colored either solid gray or green. Although very simple in design, they are sometimes accompanied by ornate decorations such as the one that belonged to Lutz in the Esper Mansion.

Usage[]

Telepathy balls are magical devices that allow people to communicate not only with each other but also with monstrous creatures that have languages that are otherwise unintelligible.

In one instance, a telepathy ball was used to store the will and memories of it owner, the legendary esper known as Lutz. Upon being presented with a worthy candidate, the telepathy ball would transfer the esper's "spirit" into the next generation successor thereby giving them his knowledge and in essence becoming known as the new "Lutz."

Phantasy Star[]

A sphere is a communication device in Phantasy Star that allows its user to converse with both people and creatures that speak a language. Its power is stronger than Alis Landale's Chat spell, granting the player the ability to speak with a wider variety of monsters, and is equal to Lutz' Tele magic.

Spheres can be purchased from the second-hand shops in Casba and Skure for 30 meseta each.

Phantasy Star IV[]

In Phantasy Star IV, a telepathy ball makes a short appearance in a cutscene in the Esper Mansion. It is here that the team learns that Lutz has long since passed away. Before he died, his will and memories were stored within the magical sphere awaiting a new successor. Rune Walsh is deemed worthy to be officially declared the fifth generation Lutz.
