The story of Phantasy Star covers the events in the Algol star system during the first millennium. This entry marks the beginning of the quadrilogy depicting Algol's battle against Dark Falz and The Profound Darkness.

Prologue[]

Deep within the Andromeda galaxy exists the three-planet star system known as Algol. These three planets consist of Motavia, the desert planet and home to the Motavian population, Dezoris, the ice planet with a native species of people called Dezorians, and Palma, the temperate planet host to vast seas and a native population of humans known to other species as Palmanians. About 200 years prior to the start of our story, Palman engineers invented a means to travel through space, and it was this boon in technology that allowed Palmanians to thrive by resolving their overpopulation crisis. They colonized the neighboring planets and civilization flourished.[1]

Ps1 instr08

In the year AW 328, Head Priest and Prime Minister Reipard Lashiec, known to the general public simply as Lassic, assumes the role of provisional king after the previous king dies under mysterious circumstances.[1] Under Lassic's democratic rule as a benevolent leader, the people's desires are heard and provided for, and life is good for all. However, this period of prosperity would not last.[2]

A new religion was spreading, the source no one knew. Its speakers, a mystery. It was said that any mortal that joined this faith was promised eternal life. Lassic was growing old and upon hearing the promise of immortality, he was the first to join. It was at this point that he changed. The once kind king, now adorned in a threatening suit of armor, began to so severely tax his people that businesses and towns fell to ruin. Creatures stalked the planets, the dead reanimated, Robotcops were installed to seek and destroy all who opposed Lassic's reign. It was then that the people realized that Lassic, empowered by black magic, became a corrupt tyrant. In secret, brave individuals began to rally together to oppose this evil.[2]

The year is AW 342. A spaceport worker in Camineet named Nero is one such rebel. Using his job as a cover, Nero tried to learn what it was that the king was hiding but he was discovered. Robotcops decide to make an example of him as they surround and publicly beat him nearly to death. A girl screams and runs to her brother, cradling him in his final dying moments.[2][3]

"Alis, it's too late for me. Be strong

"Alis, it's too late for me. Be strong."

As Nero lies on the ground dying of his wounds, he relinquishes his short sword to the girl, his younger sister, Alis Landale, and asks her to take up his quest to rid Algol of Lassic's evil. He suggests that she first seeks out the legendary warrior Odin for help. Nero urges his sister to be strong, and then succumbs to his injuries. Alis, deeply saddened by the death of her brother, raises her sword and closes her eyes.[2][3]

"I will make sure that my brother died not in vain! Watch over and protect me, Nero!"

Gathering Information[]

Before setting off on her journey, Alis stops by the house of a neighbor named Nekise. As something of a town gossip, Nekise recalls a piece of information that Odin lives in a town named Scion. He then offers an expensive laconian pot to her as a parting gift. Random as it seems, this pot was given to him by the late Nero and Nekise gets the sense that it may be helpful in her travels. Another neighbor, Suelo, comforts Alis for the trauma she has suffered. Both wish the brave girl well and say their farewells.

Alis sets out beyond the walls of Camineet for the first time. Indeed, she discovers the rumors about creatures roaming outside towns to be true. Alis fights her way through monsters of all shapes and sizes. She takes care to avoid the shoreline, eventually finding herself in the port town of Scion. She diligently searches for the warrior that she was told to seek out, but finds that he is not here. One person explains that Odin, accompanied by a talking animal, had set out to hunt Medusa. Another happily informs her that he had sold a talking beast to a buyer in Paseo. Not wanting her trip to be in vain, Alis browses the assorted shops. She discovers a sketchy second-hand shop that offers "secrets" among its wares. After pressing the issue and refused several times, the dealer finally agrees to sell a roadpass. Having achieved her first victory, Alis leaves the town and returns back to Camineet.

After the commotion with her brother and the Robotcops, Camineet was placed under martial law. Fortunately, the guards accept her roadpass which grants her access to the spaceport. While inside, she applies for and receives a passport that allows her to use the shuttle to fly across space to Paseo on the planet Motavia.

Recalling what she learned so far, Odin was accompanied by a talking animal and a merchant had sold a talking creature to a trader in Paseo. The logical next course of action would be to fly to Paseo to see if this creature may know something about Odin's whereabouts. Alis decides to first visit Camineet's neighboring residential district, Parolit, to see if there is any other useful information to gather. Unfortunately, although she learns that Medusa lives in a cave to the south, going there alone would be suicide.

With no other leads, Alis embarks on a journey across the stars. She returns to the spaceport and boards a flight to the desert planet, Motavia.

Chance Encounter on Motavia[]

Taking in the sights, Alis notices a rapid change in scenery. Sand as far as the eye can see and mounds of dirt with what look like teeth peeking out. Motavia appears to be quite a deadly place.

Once the shuttle has landed, Alis makes her way to the markets. Along the way, she hears all sorts of gossip. Some creatures have their own intelligible language if one can manage to communicate with them. To the north of Paseo lies what is called Maharu Cave. Apparently Motavia's governor is not on good terms with King Lassic and in order to obtain an audience with said governor, one would need to present a gift for him. The choice of gift seems simple enough since he apparently has quite the sweet tooth.

Finally at the marketplace, Alis browses the store fronts. She finds a shopkeeper proudly peddling what he claims to be a rare animal and he would only be willing to part with it for one billion meseta. Disheartened at such an impossible ask, Alis refuses the offer. As she is about to leave, the trader notices the laconian pot that she has been carrying around from Nekise. He makes her an offer for it in exchange for the animal. Alis happily agrees and, once the deal is complete, she meets the meek creature. It has bright yellow fur and a blue vial with some kind of liquid around its neck.

The creature observes in silence.

The creature observes in silence.

Alis warmly introduces herself, "We will be fellow travelers. I'm Alis; what's your name?"

The creature simply replies, "I'm Myau." He waits, observing her quietly with his bright green eyes that conceal a profound intelligence.

Alis continues, "Myau, have you ever heard of a man named Odin?" At this, Myau's meek facade is broken and he immediately begins to panic.

Distraught, he exclaims, "Yes, but he is turned to stone! If he drinks this medicine, he'll be O.K., but I cannot open the bottle."

"Well, then," Alis responds, "we'd better go save Odin together, O.K.?"

Relieved that he has finally found an ally, the two join forces and continue the journey together. Their mission is to find and save Odin from Medusa's petrification curse. There is only one place to go, and that is Medusa's Cave on planet Palma south of Parolit.

Medusa Cave[]

Alis and her new traveling companion return to the spaceport and board a flight back to Palma. Upon arrival, they make a quick pit stop at the tool shop in Parolit. It pays to be prepared, especially considering Alis has not journeyed into a cave before now. She purchases a few flashes as precaution and then the duo head due south of the town for Medusa Cave.

As they peek inside, they find that the cave is completely dark and crawling with monsters. Alis lights a flash and the two proceed inside with caution. The sun's light behind them grows fainter as they walk deeper into the cave, and upon taking a turn around the first corner, their torch is now the only source of light illuminating the encroaching darkness.

Some twists, turns, and battles later, the two are shocked to see a shadow standing before them near a dead end. Alis brings the light closer and in horror sees that it is a stone statue in the shape of a man. His posture and expression suggests that he was caught by surprise prior to becoming the untimely victim of Medusa's cursed glance. Alis reaches down and gently takes the vial necklace off from around Myau's neck, twists the bottle open and pours the liquid. No sooner does she do this does the stone begin to crack; the spell is broken! Life begins to return back to the man now that he has been freed from his accursed prison and he gratefully regards his saviors.

The warrior thanks his saviors.

The warrior thanks his saviors.

"Thanks for saving me. I guess if Medusa can stop me, I don't have much hope of killing Lassic, do I?" The man chuckles genuinely at his own self deprecation.

Alis responds, "My brother died trying to kill Lassic. Before he died, he told me to seek your help."

"Is that so?" Curiosity piqued, Odin continues, "Well, I must not let your brother die unavenged."

Alis changes the subject, "Why did you try to kill Medusa?"

"Because Medusa has a mystic axe. Unfortunately, she got away from me. Anyhow, I have stashed a compass in one of the passages of this cave. Let's go get it."

Having achieved the first goal of her journey by finding and recruiting the legendary warrior Odin, the duo-turned-trio retrace Odin's footsteps toward another dead end opposite of where they were. It is there that they find a compass laying on the ground. Rumors say that the only way to navigate through the impossibly unending Eppi forest maze is to use a compass. With the instrument in hand, the party sets out from the cave heading southeast toward the forest in search of the town of Eppi.
