Ranger is a class that specializes in firearm use. Some Hunter weapons may be used. Very little or none Force weapons may be used, and some techniques may be used. A Ranger has smaller amount of health than the Hunter but has more health then than a character that is a Force class. Though health is not much of an issue as they specialize in ranged combat.

Phantasy Star Online 2[]

In Phantasy Star Online 2, the abilities a ranger carries differs compared to their PSO1 counterpart. The class specializes in using varying traps to deal with enemies in battle atop hitting with debilitating shots from a distance. They can wield Assault Rifles and Launchers each with their own Photon Arts, the former can use Blight Rounds to reduce defense while the latter can use Jellen Shots to reduce attack. Like some classes in PSO2 they also have a Build up Photon Art: Prominence Assail; firing off shots in rapid succession before firing off a supercharged shot.

  • Very long range weapons
  • Long range Photon Arts
  • Good Mobility

TIPS AND TRICKS[]

  • By default in standard movement mode, Ranger attacks can be extremely inaccurate at anything but very close ranges. Rangers will have to make very liberal use of two targeting modes, Lock On (default Q) and Over the Shoulder (default Z) to be able to accurately use their attacks at the maximum possible ranges, far more than most other classes
    • Lock On, as taught during the prologue tutorial, allows you to lock a target and your character will automatically aim all of their attacks at this target until it is destroyed, you switch targets or move out of range. There is a range limit on how far away this can be activated on an enemy, but with this active a Ranger won't have to worry at all about manually aiming and can focus on combat needing frantic mobility to avoid attacks.
    • Over the Shoulder mode truly switches your combat style to that similar of first person shooters: you get full mouse-aiming (albeit in a third-person view). Combining this with most Ranger attacks and skills being able to travel a very significant distance, notably past the maximum range that Lock On will function, skilled Rangers with experience in other first- or third-person shooters can land devastating attacks from a massive distance.
  • Get very, very comfortable in using both Lock-On and Over the Shoulder. Both are critical in different situations; while Lock-On is very vital for aiming a number of the attacks, at long range against a group of enemies it is also notorious for selecting the "wrong" enemy when you have a specific intended target, such as a creature at the center of a group so you can aim the wide-AoE Divine Strike blast of the Launcher to hit the most enemies possible. In this situation you would be far better to switch to Over the Shoulder and manually aim the blast at the ideal point.

Weapons Overview[]

The below are the two key weapon types that Rangers have access to use. As a reminder you can equip both in different Mag slots and switch between them at will, but given their often independent Skills and skill training most players tend to specialize in one of the two.

Assault Rifles (Phantasy Star Online 2)[]

At an overview, Assault Rifles are the more precise, sniper-like weapon. Rapid precision-aimed shots from a small stationary position combined with techniques for firing while dodging make this an efficient weapon and skill set.

ASSAULT RIFLE ATTACKS (PSO2 NG)[]

  • Normal Attack (default LMB): Fires rapid low-damage shots at a target while regenerating PP. Holding the fire button down can continue firing, and the Ranger can still move at a somewhat low speed
  • Razing Shot (default RMB, PP cost 16): Tapping the attack fires a quick 2-round burst of higher damage shots. Holding the button to charge transforms the attack into a piercing shot with a narrow AoE that fires when you release the button.
  • Weapon Action (default MMB): Fires a four-round burst of Normal attacks (at no PP cost and identical damage) combined with a short range dash.
  • Homing Darts (default Shift-LMB, PP cost 24): While holding down the fire button you will lock onto enemies, including multiple parts of large enemies (Being in Over the Shoulder view mode is much more effective for using this); sweeping your targeting reticle over more enemies will acquire more locks. When the button is released, small moderate-strength homing shots fly out to every locked target, allowing you to apply damage to a number of widely spread-out enemies simultaneously.
  • Blaze Shot (default Shift-RMB, PP cost 20 plus see below): Tapping the attack does a short dash plus a moderate-strength shot to the target. Holding the attack does the burst shot (at 20 PP) followed by a continuous rapid fire mode plus movement glide similar to holding down Normal Attack while moving, however the shots do slightly more damage, your movement speed is slightly faster and every shot costs an additional 1 PP
  • Revolt Aim (default Shift-MMB, PP cost 20): Fires an explosive moderate damage volley. Unfortunately not affected by Lock On; the attack will fire at an explicit distance from you and holding the attack will show the blast point, so you will need to make sure an enemy is in the target zone before you fire.

Launchers (Phantasy Star Online 2)[]

Compared to Assault Rifles, Launchers are the higher-damage option. At fully equivalent rarity and upgrades, Launchers can put out roughly 50% more damage on their designated targets than comparable Assault Rifles but they are a bit more chaotic in their attacks. Compared to other classes with equivalently upgraded weapons/armor, experienced Launcher Rangers are SERIOUS damage dealers not only from the strength of their attacks but also from how easily they can get in and stay in attack range, as well as how frequently and efficiently they can land their attacks on a target, while simultaneously dodging counterattacks.

LAUNCHER ATTACKS (PSO2 NG)[]

  • Normal Attack (default LMB): A single AoE blast after a half-second delay which restores PP. Given the delay plus movement between clicking the button and the shot firing, this can be very difficult to use in Over the Shoulder mode and is best used in Lock On
  • Fallen Impact (default RMB, cost 25 PP): Best used in Lock On Mode, fires a burst straight up which then after a delay rains 8 narrow AoE shots down on the target point. Takes a full 2 seconds between the firing button click and when the first round hits the ground, and another 2 seconds for all 8 rounds to land so this is not very useful against highly mobile targets (once fired the target point is locked and won't track a moving enemy) so this is best used as a combat starter against unaware enemies. It also cannot be spammed; firing it again cancels a previous Fallen Impact if not all (or even any) of its shots have landed.
  • Weapon Action (default MMB): Launches a sticky bomb at no PP cost against a locked target that will explode after a set time. The time delay is an extensive 30 seconds and the skill has a 1 minute cooldown, and the damage is little different from a Normal attack...limited usefulness except against bosses.
  • Fear Eraser (default Shift-LMB, PP cost 35 plus see below): Fires a large, long range laser beam for good damage. Holding the attack button down continues the attack, after approximately 2 seconds of firing an energy burst will be seen from the Ranger, releasing the attack button at this point gives a final heavy blast. The Ranger is locked in place during this attack but can turn to keep aiming the beam at a moving target.
  • Multi-Launch (default Shift-RMB, PP cost 30): Launches 9 smaller guided shots towards locked targets followed by a 10th heavy blast, the Ranger can move during the initial 9 shots. KEY NOTE: This can be used in mid-air. If toggled while in mid-air you stay hovering during the entire attack and do not drop, and given the extremely good accuracy of this technique when using Lock On to the target this can allow for quite effective mid-air combat.
  • Divine Impact (default Shift-MMB, PP cost 28): When the attack is tapped fires a very short-range shotgun like blast with a slight backstep. Charging the attack changes it to one of the most impressive Launcher skills available: releasing the attack fires a long range highly accurate grenade that explodes into a very high damage, very wide AoE blast.
