"Suspicion kills. When people doubt each other, it's hilarious. From now on, you'll always be suspicious. Your friends may not be your friends. I've seen it time and again. And I'll see it once more, here and now. Deceit kills."
— Mitra introducing herself during the siege on Mothership Xiao.

Mitra (Japanese: ミトラ), formally known as Mitra, the Twentieth, is a character in Phantasy Star Online 2. She is a Photoner known as the Goddess of Deceit as a result of her superb ability to nearly flawlessly copy the appearance of anyone she touches.

Characteristics[]

Appearance[]

Mitra is a petite lady with tanned skin and red eyes. Her pink hair, which is mostly obscured beneath a thick hood, is styled with bowl cut bangs that droop at eyebrow level, side bangs that hang just below her shoulders, and her semi long hair is tied into short pigtail braids. Her outfit, called Mitra's Attire, is a white dress with red and black accents. Her sleeves wrap around her arms and hands and slightly resemble the paws of a mammal. The back of her dress has a cape-like attachment that is split down the middle, giving it the appearance of wings. She wears thick shoes without socks.

Personality[]

Mitra has a monotonous personality and speaks in a flat, slightly robotic tone. She is apathetic, cruel and easily irritated. As she attempted to disguise herself as the protagonist to infiltrate the ARKS Ship the second time, she was shown to be greatly annoyed when Maria and Regius saw through her disguise.

History[]

Mitra was created sometime during the Photoner era alongside Varuna to protect and serve as an attendant of Shiva. Before she could fulfill her life's duty, she and her companions were rejected by Photoner society when Shiva was forced to become the vessel for the Profound Darkness. Shiva and her servants were discarded into subspace where they would remain for generations to come.

With Hariette Renata Reina Cuento saved from a cruel fate on the Omega dreamworld at the conclusion of Episode 5, Mitra was resurrected alongside Varuna and their master, Shiva. After her master Shiva absorbed the energies from the black hole where Planet Xion used to be, Shiva was able to bring both Mitra and Varuna back to the Oracle universe with her.

After her resurrection, Mitra and Varuna would follow Shiva and infiltrate the ARKS ship to express their gratitude to the protagonist for their revival. After being forced into a confrontation, Mitra engaged in a brief but fierce battle with Maria before being stopped by Shiva. After Shiva finished giving her declarations of war, Mitra and Varuna departed alongside their master.

Shortly thereafter without warning, Shiva and her servants stormed Mothership Xiao. In order to enliven their invasion, Shiva proposed a game to her attendants; the one who killed the most people, and therefore achieved the highest score, wins and the winner would be rewarded accordingly. Accepting the proposal without hesitation, Mitra made her way through the Mothership with little success in their game. Despite this, she continued seeking out distinguished targets worth many points. She eventually encountered and subsequently brutally injured Zeno, leaving a deep gash in his chest, although she was unable to finish him off. Disguised as Maria, she eventually came across the protagonist and Matoi. Her attempt at ambushing them failed when Zeno surprised her with a gunshot from his weapon. With her cover blown, Mitra removed her disguise and formally introduced herself to the ARKS before engaging them again. Once more, she was deterred from her objective when Risa attempted to snipe her from afar. Having determined her position to be undesirable and falling even more behind in their game, Mitra declared with a hint of irritation that she would look elsewhere for points and disappeared.

Shiva proved successful in driving the ARKS out of the Mothership by eliminating Xiao, forcing senior ARKS management to enact a tactical retreat via Code ABYSS. With the game concluded and the trio having successfully captured the Mothership for their own, Mitra and Varuna reappeared by Shiva's side. Shiva determined the winner of their game to be none other than Varuna, who was now in charge of the pursuit operation. As he left for his new mission, Mitra muttered with disappointment that she would have to take over watch duty. Shiva counseled her, stating that they were far from finished with the ARKS.

Later, the trio devised a reconnaissance mission to survey the city area of an ARKS Ship. While they had thus far had the element of surprise, they were not aware that Xiao had revived and fused with Kasheena's dracolite on Amduskia, gaining the ability to calculate on the same level as the Akashic Records and therefore capable of not only predicting where the luminmechs may deploy but also now able to see through Mitra's disguises. This allowed the Guardians to swiftly eliminate the Photoners' advance team. While this was taking place, Mitra disguised herself as the protagonist and wandered around the ARKS Ship. Maria, suspicious of her ally's odd behavior, attacked and uncovered Mitra's disguise. The commotion of the scuffle brought Regius to the source of the fight. Mitra attempted to gain the upper hand by discharging a flash bomb to blind everyone while she once more took the form of Maria. As the light died down, Regius was met with the sight of Maria seemingly fighting against herself. Unfazed, Regius attacked the disguised Mitra, forcing her back. Irritated, Mitra retreated back to base where she vented about her cover being blown. Impressed by ARKS' resourcefulness, Shiva once more successfully drove the ARKS back. The Photoners then discussed the chain of events leading to this moment, and determined that the ARKS have acquired calculation abilities similar to their own. Mitra proposed that they should gather intelligence on their enemies. Shiva agreed and entrusted the matter to the Goddess of Deceit.

Analyzing the situation, the ARKS dreadfully determined that Shiva was rightfully known as the ultimate vessel. With practically unlimited photonic capabilities, matching power against such an opponent would be impossible. They could, however, seek a way to seal this power. Recalling the scenario in which Matoi had her powers sealed by Harukotan's Sealing Circle, the ARKS determined this to be a lead they could not ignore. The Guardians were dispatched to survey the planet and rendezvous with Sukunahime to seek her assistance. Unfortunately, upon arriving, the planet was already teeming with luminmechs led by none other than the Goddess of Annihilation, Shiva. Just as Shiva was about to strike, Sukunahime appeared and, without a word, whisked her and her comrades away to the safety of the Spirit Realm, where many Daybreakers had taken shelter from the luminmech assault. Upon learning about the threat the Photoner forces posed, Sukunahime recruited the Guardians in a ploy to unleash Magatsu on their enemies.

With Matoi and the protagonist stationed to guard the keystone locking Magatsu away, Mitra, disguised as Shiva, appeared and promptly destroyed the seal, causing Magatsu to stir. Sukunahime then merged with the God and the two attempted to eliminate their foe. Unfortunately, even under disguise, this effort proved unfruitful as Mitra was able to repel the Harukotan gods with little effort. Undeterred, Sukunahime rose once more and enacted the ritual to summon the Sealing Circle around the Guardians and Mitra, binding the three of them to a confined space that immediately sapped Mitra of much of her power. The protagonist and Matoi managed to gravely injure Mitra who, although still disguised, blew her own cover by revealing that their effort was not against their intended target of Shiva but another. In the confusion that followed, the real Shiva appeared and sliced through Sukunahime and Kotoshiro in an ambush. Shiva and Varuna then approached their fallen comrade. As they commended her for her efforts and loyalty, Mitra shrugged their compliments off. Before succumbing to her wounds, Mitra told Varuna to continue in her stead. Upon saying that he would, Mitra's body slowly dissipated into radiant light that gradually faded away.

Powers and abilities[]

Being a Photoner, Mitra has incredibly high photon potential and extensive knowledge regarding past, lost knowledge. Mitra is shown to be an incredibly powerful being capable of fighting on par with Maria.

Despite her small figure, Mitra possesses enough strength to stop Maria's Labrys attack with her bare-hands and is able to move at insanely fast speeds.

As the Goddess of Deceit, Mitra is capable of perfectly disguising herself as any ARKs operative she touches. Throughout Episode 6, she has attempted to masquerade as Maria, Zeno, the Protagonist and even Shiva.
