Gifoie (Japanese: ギフォイエ or ギ・フォイエ), also called Gifoi or Gi-Foi, is an intermediate damage technique common to Phantasy Star games.

Background[]

The Foie series of techniques work by drawing the surrounding oxygen in the air around a target and compressing it until it ignites, ruthlessly setting enemies ablaze with powerful flames. Despite their destructive capabilities when applied offensively, these techniques were originally intended for oxygen therapy in the medical field.[1]

Etymology[]

Foie is possibly derived from the German Feuer or "fire." The prefix gi- is a modifier denoting an intermediate form of the base technique.

Phantasy Star II[]

In Phantasy Star II, gifoi costs 6 TP to cast. It deals 33 to 46 damage to a single enemy, with a 90% chance to hit.

Rolf, Hugh, and Shir are the only player characters who can use gifoi. Rolf learns gifoi at level 5, Hugh learns gifoi at level 12, and Shir learns gifoi at level 15.

Phantasy Star IV[]

In Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium, gifoi costs 6 TP to cast. It deals fire damage to a single enemy equal to 72 plus the caster's mental stat, modified by the enemy's fire sensitivity and mental defense stat. Slugs, clawed flies, mermen, zombies, rappies, and monsters in Dezolis and Myst Vale are especially sensitive to fire damage.

Gifoi can be combined with a zan type technique or a hewn skill in any order to do a fire storm combo, or used after Wren's burst rockets skill to do a shooting star combo.

Alys, Rune, and Kyra are the only player characters who can use gifoi. Alys learns gifoi at level 14, and Rune learns gifoi at level 19. Kyra already knows gifoi when she joins the party.

Phantasy Star Online series[]

Phantasy Star Online[]

In Phantasy Star Online, gifoie is a medium-level offensive technique of fire. When cast a fireball appears and spirals out from the caster along the ground, damaging any targets that wander into its range. Higher levels improve the damage dealt, the length of time the fireball lasts, and the radius of the spell.

Gifoie does not require a target to be cast, and it hits multiple enemies, but only once per enemy. It also has fairly long start-up and cool-down periods, and should be used with caution.

Gifoie is often used as a method to receive items from several rag rappies at once. A hunter will gather all of the rappies into a tight group and defeat them all. While they lie on the ground the hunter will then cast gifoie and move far enough away for the rappies to get up. When all the rappies regain consciousness, they immediately take damage from being inside the gifoie's radius, and all drop items at once.

Red Merges and Fire Scepter:Agni will boost all fire techniques, including gifoie, by 20% when equipped.

Twin Blaze's special attack is a low-level gifoie.

Phantasy Star Online 2[]

Main article: Gifoie (Phantasy Star Online 2)

Gifoie is a fire elemental damage technique in Phantasy Star Online 2. Only characters with force or techter as their current class or sub-class can use techniques.

Phantasy Star TTRPG[]

Gi-Foi is a technique available to the Guardian, Hunter, and Thaumaturge professions in the Phantasy Star Tabletop Roleplaying Game. It is a rank 3 technique that can be cast instantly. It costs 10 TP to cast and can strike a single target within 120 feet of the caster. Rank boosted versions of this spell increase the damage of both of its effects for each rank above 3.

Upon successfully being cast, a spiraling orb of flame is shot forth from the caster, striking its primary target with fire damage. Any other beings caught in the crossfire within 10 feet of the target also take fire damage, its power, of which, is determined by a Dexterity saving throw.

Foi Magics

Available in three strengths: Foi, Gifoi, and Nafoi. All three compress the oxygen in the air until it ignites, enflaming the enemy it's directed at. Gifoi also burns through metal. Nafoi incinerates an enemy to ashes.

Phantasy Star Tabletop Roleplaying, page 102
You shoot a spiraling orb of flame at a creature within range. Make ranged tech attack against the target. On a hit, the target takes 5d8 fire damage. On a miss, it takes half damage. Hit or miss, each creature within 10 feet of the target then makes a Dexterity saving throw, taking 4d8 fire damage on a failed save, or half damage on a successful one.
