In Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis a number of Classes were kept from Phantasy Star Online 2 however they act somewhat differently in New Genesis. You will choose one of the following Classes during character creation but this is not fixed; you will be able to switch classes at any time at a Class Counter in a town. All experience you gain in a particular Class is saved and you can switch back at any time.

Main Class List[]

  • Hunter (class), close range melee fighters with multiple skills that increase their damage resistance. They can use Swords, Wired Lances and Partisans.
  • Fighter, a very short-range fighter that can do good damage output but cannot take hits well. They can use Knuckles, Twin Daggers and Double Sabers.
  • Ranger, a very long-range gunfighter that relies more on evasion for defense while putting out consistent damage, and boosting the damage that allies do to key points of enemies by weakening it via Blight Rounds. Can use Assault Rifles and Launchers.
  • Gunner, a shorter-range gunslinger based more on putting lots of rapid small attacks on enemies instead of slow heavy shots, and relies heavily on evasion to survive. Can use Assault Rifles and Twin Machine Guns.
  • Force, effectively the dedicated Mages of the classes, able to fire a variety of elemental spells at decent ranges in one of the six Elements both to attempt to add status effects to enemies (such as Freeze) and take advantage of elemental weaknesses of enemies. Can use Rods and Talis.
  • Techter, a short-range class more focused on support; they are among the only classes that can cast a healing ability on an ally. Can use Talis and Wands.
  • Braver, a range-melee hybrid class that can adapt to many different situations of combat. Can use Katanas and Bows.
  • Bouncer, a short-range melee class that can often knock enemies into the air and follow them to keep striking. Can use Soaring Blades and Jet Boots.
  • Waker, a range-melee tech class that can adapt to all kinds of situations by using Familiars. Can use Harmonizers.
  • Slayer, a short-range gunslash class that can shoot and slash enemies. Can use Gunblades.

Each Class also has its own Skill Tree which can have Skillpoints allocated to them at the Class Shop. Skill Trees will be explained further below.

Subclass[]

Alongside your main Class, you can choose one of the above as a Subclass (one that is not the same as your main Class). The aspects of a Subclass are the following:

  • Your chosen Subclass can also gain experience and levels, which you would get full access to if you switched to it as a Main class. 50% of the experience you gain from your Main class is copied into your Subclass, however it will not be allowed to go higher than 5 levels below that of your Main class.
  • You are able to equip all of the weapons of your Subclass and fit the corresponding Photon Arts.
  • A portion of the core attributes of your Subclass get added to your Main Class, making them even stronger.
  • The effectiveness of the Subclass Skill Tree is notably reduced, which will be explained below further, but given that a number of the Skills will be inaccessible or have a notably reduced effect choosing a Subclass for the purpose of switching to it in certain kinds of combat has limited usefulness. However, a few of the classes have noteworthy Skills that are fully accessible even when your Main class weapon is active instead of that of your Subclass.

Choosing an effective Subclass for your main Class can be a bit tricky, but the following guidelines may help.

  • If for your Main class you prefer the weapon and skills that another Class also has, such as the Force and Techter both using Talis, look through those skills in the Class Counter to see if you find anything that will be useful for your Main.
  • If for your Main class you prefer the weapon and skills that are distinctly unique to that Class (such as the Launcher for Rangers) or for a multi-class weapon you don't like any of the viable Subclass options, certain classes have Universal skills that can be used by any other class with any weapon:
    • The Hunter (class) has Hunter Physique and Flash Guard, which can notably reduce the damage your Main takes through Damage Reduction.
    • The Fighter has Defeat Advantage and Defeat PP Recovery, increasing your effectiveness in applying damage to Downed enemies.
    • The Ranger has Bad Condition Ward and Bad Condition Reduction, significantly protecting you against negative Status Ailments.
    • The Gunner has Attack PP Recovery, Overwhelm and Dodge PP Gain which significantly increase your PP restoration allowing for more frequent skill use.
    • The Force has PP Recovery Boost which notably increases your natural PP regeneration rate
    • The Braver has several skills that increase the strength of Restasigne and grant PP regeneration using them.
    • The Bouncer has Defeat Amplifier to increase the Downed Effect on an enemy and Partial Destroy Advantage to give damage and defense boosts when you have destroyed subcomponents of an enemy.
    • The Waker has multiple skills affecting Restasigne and healing/damage reduction buffs that trigger if your Health drops below a certain percentage.
    • The Slayer has skills increasing your Critical Hit rate and PP gain if you land a Critical Hit.

Skill Trees[]

Each Class has its own Skill Tree, which will be elaborated on further in the respective Class pages. The fundamentals universal to all Skill Trees are the following:

  • You do not gain Skill Points from levelling up your character unlike other RPGs; all Skill Points are gained by completing training sites found around the game world. This is explained further in Exploration, Resource Collection and Combat (PSO2NGS)
  • Every Skill Tree for every Class gets every Skill Point you obtain (i.e., if you complete a training Tower which gives 4 Skill Points, every single Class Tree will get 4 more skill points for use), so you won't need to repeat a training site for every Class to get the Skill Points for that class.
  • You can assign Skill Points for every single Class at a Class Counter in a town, even for classes you aren't actively using.
  • Most of the Skills in every Skill Tree are controlled to be used mainly by that tree's Class.
    • If a skill says "Only useable by a Main Class" it means precisely that; the effect of the skill will only be available if that class is your Main class
    • If a skill says "Only useable with Weapon XXX", not only do you have to have that weapon type equipped in one of your Frames it has to be ACTIVE, and the effect of the skill immediately turns off if you switch weapons. NOTE, Multi-Weapons, explained in Item Enhancement (PSO2NGS), can also satisfy this requirement.
    • It is possible for a skill to have both of the above restrictions at the same time, i.e. you have to have the respective class as your Main class and have that specific weapon type active.
    • All skills that are accessible as a Subclass will have a reduced effect; this will be shown in the Skill attributes section
