Barriers and Shields are defensive armwear in Phantasy Star Online that assist the player character by providing beneficial stat bonuses to defense, evasion, and elemental resistance when they are equipped. These items are essential for exploring the mysterious world of Ragol as monsters become stronger over time as the difficulty level increases.

The common items in this classification do not have a cosmetic appearance; they simply boost stats without affecting the player character's outward appearance. The rare items, however, usually display a cosmetic item somewhere on the character's body. These are usually held on the arm, but there are also some that are worn as hats or earrings.

Amplifiers can be combined with certain barriers in order to create a shield that boosts the power of techniques.
